Corsavy

The Chapel of Sant Marti :

Located at the entrance to the village when arriving from Arles sur Tech, this chapel with Romanesque architecture was consecrated in 1158 to become the parish church, its construction dates back to the XNUMXth century. Note its oculus which let sunlight into the church as well as the imposing bell tower restored thanks to the Salvaguarda de Sant Marti de Cortsaví association.

The Corsavy Tower :

It is a circular tower with a half-moon buttress on the mountain side, later than its original construction. Obviously, this buttress was built to prevent the tower from tipping into the ravine. This tower was used to send or transmit a signal to the lookouts of the other towers in the region during invasions, it is a so-called signal tower. The tower is not open to visitors, however you can approach it and walk around it. It should also be said that there is a very beautiful panorama of the village of Corsavy and the Vallespir as far as the sea. Built in the 13th century by Jacques II of Majorca, these towers, most of which were installed on the crests of the mountains, thus established a real communication network by smoke signals. The signal was sent by a fire lit at the top of the tower. This way, the valley could be warned of an attack.

The Batère Tower :

Located in the commune of Corsavy, it overlooks the Col de la Descargue, proudly standing on a rocky peak of the Puig de l'Estelle ridge, the first buttress of the Canigou. The Batère tower communicated with the other towers of Vallespir (about fifteen) and the Del Far tower, but also those of the plain (about forty). This network declined from the 15th century.

Coustouges

St. Mary's Church :

Church of Sainte-Marie 1142th century: The current building as a whole is to be placed at the date of consecration XNUMX. The Romanesque baptismal font is astonishing by its large dimensions. The sanctuary grille is one of the masterpieces of local ironwork by its quality and its scale. There is also in the nave, on the ground, an immense rectangular granite font which has lost its cover. Finally, the bell tower all in pink sandstone is from the same period as the church.

The Bastide

Saint-Michel church :

Originally, a church was dedicated to Saint John (certainly the castle church). A second church, this time a parish church, nearby, was dedicated to the Archangel Michael (apse still visible, taken from a later construction). In the 13th century, thanks to the fortification of the square, the castle church was enlarged and became a parish church. Subsequently, the cult of Saint Michael supplanted that of Saint John. The building, originally Romanesque, has undergone multiple developments or restorations, moving ever further away from the original layout.

The Bastide Castle :

in the heart of the village. It communicated by signals with the castle of Bellpuig and the tower of Batère.

Lamanère is the southernmost village in metropolitan France. A symbolic and picturesque place to discover during a stroll.

The Tech

Dedicated to the Virgin, this 1322th century church is listed as a historical monument. Inside you will find an interesting sarcophagus from 1637, a censer with the Perpignan hallmark dated 1708 and a beautiful altarpiece adorning the high altar executed from 1725 to XNUMX.

Places to visit in Prats-de-Mollo-la-Preste

Fortified town of Prats-de-Mollo-la-Preste:

Prats-de-mollo-la-preste, classified among Most Beautiful Villages of France, watches over the Tech valley, in the heart of the Pyrénées-Orientales. This fortified village, crossed by the torrent of the Guilleme, is divided into two: the lower town houses old bourgeois houses, a church and a 17th-century town house. Its steep streets and winding alleys lined with narrow houses give the upper town a medieval charm, once dominated by a royal castle.

The medieval enclosure, remodeled in the 17th century by Vauban, is punctuated by patrol paths, watchtowers and gates with machicolations. Finally, the majestic Fort Lagarde, which overlooks the city, offers a breathtaking view of the valley and immerses visitors in the military history of the region.

Fort Lagarde :

Designed to monitor the Franco-Spanish border, Fort Lagarde overlooks the fortified town of Prats-de-Mollo-la-Preste. At the heart of the monument, a medieval signal tower dominates the keep, reinforced from 1686 by Vauban. In addition, a military retreat route connects the Fort to the town, thus creating a remarkable architectural ensemble. There are different modes of discovery: individual visit, guided tour, narrated tour, animated tour "The Fort takes care" (see the calendar of festivities)...

The thermal baths of La Preste :

A place of relaxation and care, ideal for a well-being break surrounded by nature.

La Verneda:

Discover the particularities of each village, the traditions and festivals of our valley, but also the architecture and the particularities of our landscapes!

La Verneda also hosts temporary exhibitions throughout the year. It is also the headquarters of the EGTC, Pays d'Art et d'Histoire Transfrontalier.

Church of Saints Justus and Ruffine:

At the origin of the village at the end of the 9th century, the parish church, imposing by its dimensions, was rebuilt twice in the 13th century and the 17th century. It bears witness to the past splendor of Prats-de-Mollo given the profusion of its baroque art furniture.

Places to visit in Saint-Laurent-de-Cerdans

Catalan creation:

In the 19th century, the espadrille was born in Saint-Laurent-de-Cerdans, transforming an ancestral craft into a thriving industry that supported an entire valley for nearly a hundred years. Today, Catalan espadrilles or "Vigatanes" (pronounced "bigatanes"), are made in a workshop set up in a renovated old factory. The creations combine modernity and tradition thanks to the colorful fabrics of "Toiles du Soleil", while respecting artisanal methods. An adjoining shop allows you to observe the manufacturing process live, and guided tours are offered to share this unique know-how.

The “André Abet” House of Heritage and Memory:

Housed in the premises of the former workers' cooperative "l'Union Sandalière" (1923), this place of collective memory offers a reconstruction of an espadrille and weaving factory. It also traces the history of La Retirada, the exodus of Spanish Republicans welcomed in Saint-Laurent-de-Cerdans in January and February 1939. Indeed, of the 70 refugees who passed through the town, 000 remained on site, so the wounded and sick were taken care of on the second floor of this building.

Church of Saint-Laurent-de-Cerdans :

The village of Saint-Laurent-de-Cerdans was born in the 1168th century around the construction of its church. This church, built under the authority of the monks of the abbey of Arles-sur-Tech (founded in the XNUMXth century), aimed to bring together the scattered inhabitants of the farms of the Albères hills around a place that was both religious and defensive. Dedicated to Saint Laurent, the church gave its name to the village. It was only in XNUMX, in the XNUMXth century, that the term "Cerdans" appeared, derived from the name of the Cérètes, a primitive people of the region, with no connection with Cerdagne.

Chapel of Our Lady of the Sort :

Outside, a stone used as a bench seems to come from the old pediment bearing the partially erased inscription "de la Sort 1691". This date could correspond to the construction of the first building, while the one engraved on the portal, 1755, would indicate the date of the current building. In Gothic style, it is distinguished by its ribbed vaults. A statue representing the patron saint of the place and enthroned at the high altar, was sculpted only at the level of the head and hands. In the past, young men confided in this virgin before participating in the drawing of lots for conscription.

Saint Marsal

Church of Saint Marsal :

13th century church with a 17th century red marble holy water font.

serralongue

The Towers of Cabrenç :

The Cabrenç towers are a medieval defensive complex from the 3th and 30th centuries, located on the border of the communes of Lamanère and Serralongue, in the Pyrénées-Orientales. Perched on a rocky spur overlooking the valleys, the site includes a ruined castle, three towers, as well as the remains of a chapel dedicated to Saint-Michel. This heritage, including a signal tower and a restored fort, is accessible by hiking trails from Lamanère or Serralongue (approximately 4 to 30 hours of walking). The Bistrots de Pays or local town halls can hand over the keys to the towers. Listed as a Historic Monument, the site obtained this recognition for the middle tower and the ruins of the castle in 1988, and for the north tower in 1994.

Church of Saint Mary of Serralongue:

This Romanesque church from the 1713th and 12th centuries, built in pink and blue granite, is distinguished by its monumental portal with four arches and its double-leaf door decorated with Catalan wrought iron hinges, with a dragon-shaped lock. Inside, you can admire, first of all, a Baroque altarpiece in polychrome and gilded wood dating from 13, then four side chapels, a 1948th century bell wheel called "Rodella" with its XNUMX bells representing the apostles, and finally a cross of outrages from the XNUMXth century. The church also houses the ossuary of a Count of Cabrenç, who died during a crusade in Jerusalem. Listed as a historical monument since December XNUMX, XNUMX, the church joins the Conjurador by a small picturesque path.

The Conjurador of Serralongue:

Built in the 14th century, this cubic building, unique in France, has faces oriented towards the cardinal points. In the past, the inhabitants organized processions around this place in order to ward off bad weather and thus protect the crops.

Taulis

The Parish Church of St. John the Evangelist :

A simple but charming church, which also tells the story of this small village in Vallespir.
