The Forests of Vallespir

The Haut Vallespir is renowned for its forests of holm oaks, beeches and firs that cover its mountains. For example, municipalities such as Corsavy, Montferrer, and serralongue are surrounded by these dense forests, ideal for quiet walks or more sporty hikes. These forests are also the habitat of many animal species, including deer, wild boars and birds of prey.

The territory is home to a variety of wildlife with protected species such as the Pyrenean desman, a small endemic aquatic mammal, as well as vultures and golden eagles. In the heights, it is also possible to come across chamois, emblematic of the Pyrenean fauna.

Protected Areas

The Vallespir Canigó includes several protected and classified areas in nature reserves, in order to preserve its unique flora and fauna. Among these spaces, we find the reserves of Prats-de-mollo-la-preste and wooded areas near Saint-Laurent-de-Cerdans, where nature is still wild and where the landscapes change with the seasons.

Hiking

Vallespir Canigó is a paradise for hikers. In fact, marked trails run throughout the region, offering routes for all levels. Circuits around Lamanere, the southernmost village in France, to the more arduous climbs of Canigo, the possibilities are endless.

With its winding roads and forest tracks, the area is also ideal for cycling and mountain biking enthusiasts.

Climbing and Canyoning

For the more adventurous, climbing and canyoning are ideal activities for thrill seekers.



Via ferrata of the Roc de la Campana:

Via ferrata in autonomy. It includes climbing and three rope bridges. It is necessary to bring your own equipment (helmet, harness, lanyard, gloves).
The Via Ferrata is open all year round except in the event of a weather alert. It is accessed 50 meters below the Mondony Natural Pool on the right bank (cross the watercourse).
As for the return, it is done by the flag hike to the parking lot of the former Army Thermal Hospital.
It takes about 2 hours to do the via ferrata, then 30 minutes to walk back down to the parking lot of the military hospital. Its difficulty is K45 (Hüsler rating scale)
