The Canigó region is an exceptional mountain where legend and tradition, the secular and the sacred, intertwine. With just over 50,000 inhabitants, it is also a vibrant and inhabited destination encompassing five historical micro-regions: Conflent, Vallespir, Rossello, Riberal, and Aspres. Canigó is also an emblematic place for the Catalans, who consider it their sacred mountain.
The appeal of this mountain, its renown, its heritage diversity and the concerted work between the Joint Syndicate and the Communities of Communes at the scale of the Canigó – País català destination for several years, make it one of the Great Sites of the Occitanie Region.
Nature tourism:
The Canigó massif has established itself as a national hotspot for hiking and outdoor activities, with over 200 listed sites. Remarkably, these activities take place within the highest density of protected natural areas in Occitanie. Thanks to the favorable climate, activities can be enjoyed year-round, as demonstrated by the sporting events that punctuate the seasons in the region: the 100 Mile Ultra Trail Sud de France, the Bearman Ironman Xtrem Triathlon, the Vallespir Skyrace Trail Skyrunning, and the Challenge Sud Canigó , which comprises six trail races throughout the year.
Well-being and hydrotherapy:
fruit of torment geological through the ages, the basement of the destination Canigo is full of natural hot waters whose resurgences and virtues make this massif a well-being destination in its own right, both as the medical treatment, on the one hand and fitness stay, on the other hand. Historic cradle of Thermal Chain of the Sun, the 4 thermal spas: Amélie-les-Bains, La Preste, Vernet-les-Bains and Molitg-les-Bains welcome nearly 40 spa guests each year. It is the highest thermal concentration in the Region, i.e. a quarter of the curists welcomed annually in Occitania.

With nearly a hundred listed or registered historical monuments , a UNESCO World Heritage site (Villefranche-de-Conflent), two designated " Pays d'Art et d'Histoire" (Conflent-Canigó and Catalan Valleys), and three of the most beautiful villages in France (Eus, Villefranche, and Evol), the region abounds with heritage sites of regional and international significance. Tourism is built around these heritage sites, complemented by internationally renowned artistic and cultural events such as the Pablo Casals Festival, the Bear Festival, and the European Ironwork Meetings.
Artisan and Gastronomic Tourism
In connection with the local terroir and agricultural practices, the region offers numerous agricultural products with official quality and origin labels (AOC/IGP, organic, etc.). Examples include Rosée des Pyrénées® (veal), El Xaï® (lamb), El Tirabuixó® (pork), the Canigó black truffle, and Rousquille du Vallespir. Similarly, many artisans possess remarkable, sometimes ancestral , skills that can be discovered in places such as the Pôle des Métiers d'Art (Arts and Crafts Center ), Toiles du Soleil (Sun Fabrics) , and the Maison du Grenat (Grenat House) , all recognized as Living Heritage Companies, or the Master Espadrille Maker Création Catalane , among others.
