CONFLENT FRANCHE CITY RAMPARTS

Founded in 1092 by Count Guillaume Raymond de Cerdagne, in a strategic lock of the Tet valley, at the foot of Canigó, Villefranche has preserved intact a fortified enclosure whose construction spans from the 11th to the 19th century. The visit allows you to tour the interior and appreciate the ingenuity of the successive defensive systems. The strategic interest of the city, already recognized in the Middle Ages, is reinforced after the Treaty of the Pyrenees (1659), Louis XIV instructs Vauban to complete the defenses of Villefranche and to make it a stronghold.
