CHURCH OF SAINTE-MARIE D'ESPIRA DE CONFLENT

It was in 1081 that a priory of Augustinian canons was founded by the monks of Serrabone in Espira. This priory quickly grew to a large size and had a significant influence in Conflent. It is a Romanesque building with a single nave covered in a pointed barrel vault without doubleaux. The church contains Baroque furniture of great artistic richness. The greatest Baroque sculptor workshops worked there from 1663 to 1723.
