Located in the commune of Corsavy, the Batère Tower overlooks the Col de la Descargue, proudly standing on a rocky peak of the Puig de l'Estelle ridge, the first buttress of the Canigou. The signal towers of the Pyrénées Orientales are an example of a complex surveillance and communication network developed from the 12th century on the orders of Jacques II of Majorca. Lookouts emitted coded smoke signals during the day and luminous fire signals at night, in particular to broadcast the alert during the Norman invasions. The Batère Tower communicated with the other towers of Vallespir (about fifteen) and the Del Far Tower and those of the plain (about forty). This network declined from the 15th century.
