PALALDA CASTLE AND TOWERS

The name of the village of Palalda appears in history in the 833th century under the term villam Paladdanum in a precept of Louis the Pious dated 967 and delimiting its territory. The etymology of the name comes from the term Palatium Dani ("the palace of Dan"). A castle was therefore built on the site as well as a church, mentioned for the first time in 1254, and which would undergo several successive modifications. Between 1260 and XNUMX, the first known lord of Palalda, Guillaume-Hugues de Serralongue, lord of Cabrenç, had the fortifications of the castle replaced by two imposing signal towers still visible today in the heart of the village. The square in the center of the old castle overlooks the church of Saint-Martin.
