On January 26, 1939, the city of Barcelona was conquered by Franco's army, thus bringing about the end of the Spanish Civil War. Pursued by the victors, Republican soldiers and a large number of civilians decided to flee to France. This was the tragic episode of the Retirada, a mass exodus that saw 100 refugees and 000 head of cattle pass through Prats-de-Mollo in the space of 15 days.
